What is a Trigger Point?

Simply put, a trigger point is a "hyper-irritable point in a taut band" of muscle; we call it "neuromuscular work" because these points tend to occur where the nerve cells meet the muscle cels, which is called the "neuromuscular junction".
A trigger point is an energy crisis: a segment of your muscle contracts so tightly that it cuts off its own supply of blood (and therefore nutrients and energy). Because a muscle requires energy to release a contraction, a trigger point prevents that segment of muscle from releasing.
When the muscle continues to contract without rest, it creates pain, tension, and a decrease in range of motion.
Trigger points also refer pain in predictable patterns 85% if the time (to sometimes surprising areas, like toothaches for head trigger points and leg pain for hip trigger points), making them simple to locate and release. And trigger points never work alone - once a trigger point creates a knot that your therapist can feel, it is actually thousands of trigger points in one place, which is why it may feel like the knot is "moving" as your therapist releases the area.

The best news is, research shows that trigger points are also 100% treatable. Neuromuscular massage therapy releases trigger points by holding precise, intuitive
compression at the hyper-irritable spot, which increases circulation in the area. The increased blood and nutrient supply provides enough energy for the muscle to exit the energy crisis and release you from pain and dysfunction in that muscle.
